At the end of October in 2022, Sarah Heller, my dear friend, a talented artist and a founding member of Bent Wrapped and Hammered, passed away.
Sarah and I were teaching assistants in Linda Van Hart’s jewelry and metalsmithing class for several years. During that time, we launched Bent Wrapped and Hammered as a way to showcase and sell our artwork. We joked it was the best way to support our jewelry habit. Our studio time was always well spent; exploring techniques, looking to each other for inspiration and advice, laughter (when we got goofy) and tears (when we hit our thumbs accidentally with the planishing hammer).
Many of Sarah’s designs are botanically inspired. One of my favorites has always been her copper maple leaf pendant. I chose her maple leaf design as the basis for a tribute piece. I used a maple leaf found at Piney Run Nature Center as a model and created a similar pendant in sterling silver. The leaf itself is 2.5 inches wide and 2 inches long. Each one is adorned with a variety of baroque pearls, crystals and assorted gemstone beads. It comes on an adjustable 16-18 inch black cord but can be placed on a chain or neck wire of your choosing. In honor of Sarah’s love for our furry companions, for each pendant sold, half the sale price will be donated to Kind Keeper No-Kill animal rescue in Sarah’s name.
At the end of the day, I can honestly say that Sarah was more than just a business partner. She was a true friend!
Miss ya Buddy!
